It’s a Snap!

Lately, I found that I’ve become more focused on calories than healthy, clean eating. To move my focus back to healthy eating, I’ve decided to take a break from MyFitnessPal to try something new, DietSnaps.

DietSnaps combines my need for an online food log with my fondness for Instagram. Essentially, it’s like any other food journal, except that you take pictures of what you eat and drink instead of writing it down. But unlike MyFitnessPal and other online journals, it doesn’t detail calories and nutrition information. And more importantly, it doesn’t give that “mess with my head message” of “If every day were like today, you would weigh ### in five weeks.”

I started using MyFitnessPal to journal my food intake and provide a weekly report to my nutrition counselor. It’s great for that, and I also love the social aspect of it. But I found myself worrying more about that message than what I was actually putting in my mouth. I was starting to obsess with calories, and at least for me, that isn’t a good thing.

After two years with a nutrition counselor – not to mention years and years of “dieting” – I know what to eat and what not to eat. I know to avoid fast and processed foods, eat more vegetables and plant-based foods, and treat myself well, but sparingly. That, along with regular exercise, is how I’ve gotten healthier and lost 90-something lbs. Yes, calories were important, but not emphasized. If I ate/eat like I should, the calories take care of themselves.

If that’s the case, some of you may ask why even do a food log then? Experts agree that recording what you consume is a vital part of losing weight and keeping it off. It’s as simple as that.

I’ve just started using DietSnaps; today is just my second day. But already, I feel less pressure on meeting that “magic number” of calories. I’ll check back in next week to report how this new journaling method is working.

 

Ice Cream, Ice Cream, Bo-Bice Cream; Banana-Fana Fo-Fice Cream

If you’re a regular reader, you may know that I’ve been having problems with ice cream. Eating too much, craving it too much, feeling bad about it too much.  I was just about to give up on ice cream when I discovered a healthier, cleaner way to enjoy it – frozen-banana “ice cream,” made only from frozen bananas. I sliced and froze bananas last night, and I was ready to pull out my mini-food processor tonight. Imagine my joy when I saw Yoyanas, a gadget that makes a frozen dessert out of any frozen fruit!

I did a careful online vetting, and once I read the rave reviews from actual users, ordered one from Amazon.com. And I’m not wasting any  time – thanks to my Amazon Prime membership (eternal thanks to Chris Segars from recommending), will have it in time for a frozen treat tomorrow night!

Stay tuned. This could be a life changer!

Blog the Vote…Or Should It Be Vote the Blog?

In July, I entered Lexington Medical Center’s Every Woman blog contest. It now appears that one of the criteria is support from the public.

LMC is asking people to show their support for their favorite blogger on LMC’s Facebook page. I don’t have time to launch a campaign, but I am competitive, so I’d like to ask you to support me via a quick post.

What started as a way for me to hold myself accountable to a new way of life has become an integral part of my success, and I hope the success of others. Through the blog, I’ve connected with and received support from others across the United States who are facing similar challenges. I’ve been able to share the resources I’m fortunate enough to have access to, including my nutritionist and trainer.  I’ve also been able to show others that it IS possible for a 40-something-year-old-woman to return to her college weight – not through surgery, shots or shock diets – but through basic clean eating and regular exercise.

Should I be fortunate enough to win, I plan to use half of the $250 stipend toward the purchase of a lap top to facilitate my blog easier. I will donate the other half to St. Lawrence Place, a local non-profit who provides support services, life skills, and transitional housing to enable homeless families to achieve independent living as productive members of the community. I chose St. Lawrence Place because their director has a personal mission to teach their families the importance of clean eating and how they can accomplish it on a lean budget.

What the Heck IS Coffee-Mate Anyway?

This post from Organic Authority is quite timely as I’ve just given up “creamers” within the past two weeks.

I’ve just started my third-12 weeks at Doctors Wellness Center, and I’ve been looking for small ways to “up my game,” but I only considered giving up creamer by mistake. I was at The Summit Club for lunch and had a cup of their DELISH coffee, but they didn’t have soy milk, so I drank it without. I then realized that I don’t NEED creamer; the coffee was wonderful without it.

Since my move to eat healthier, I actually switched from Coffee-Mate type creamers to vanilla soy creamer, which is vegan, but it still includes:

  • Palm Oil: A saturated fat
  • Potassium Phosphate: A salt
  • Sodium Citrate: A salt

Nothing that is HORRIBLE, really, especially in the relatively small servings I have, but it’s certainly processed and not quite clean eating!
