2012: The Year of Organization?

I’m not much on making resolutions – well, maybe a little – but getting organized in 2012 is definitely on the top of my list!

That’s why I’m so excited about Organize Now, A Week by Week Guide to Simplify Your Space and Your Life. It’s a 52-week plan to get organized, and what better week to start that the first week of the new year!

Week One’s charge is to “Organize Your Mind,” and I’ve started a few days early. I’ll be working on two main things this week, both of which may be a challenge.

  1. Getting at least seven hours of sleep

The problem with sleep? I workout in the morning. Very early in the morning. On the days I strength train, I get up at 4:34 a.m.; on cardio only days, I can sleep as late as 6 a.m. Early mornings are a great time to work out because aside from just not getting up, there aren’t a lot of distractions. Very few work events, parties, presentations or headaches occur before 7 a.m.

One problem with getting up early:  you have to go to bed early. And going to bed early is a problem for many reasons, including the fact that I live with an affirmed night owl. I try to be IN bed by 8:30 p.m. and asleep by 9:30 p.m., but that’s not always doable. This will be a challenge, for sure.

  2. Limiting the amount of TV I watch

Limiting TV? Probably easier done than said. I rarely just sit down to watch TV; I usually have it on for background noise or company. Still, I know that it distracts me.

As a start, I’m going to give up morning TV after 7 a.m. on weekdays. Before 7 a.m. isn’t a problem. I usually tune in to get the weather and a look at early headlines, and I always “watch” on the elliptical at the gym. But after 7 a.m., it becomes a distraction. And a lot of times, an irritation.

I’d appreciate any tips you might have on getting more sleep and/or limiting TV.  I’d also love to hear about your resolutions, too!

Happy New Year’s!

New Dog!

First off, apologies. I’ve been AWOL from the blog. My father died the last day I blogged – December 11 – and I was obviously otherwise occupied. I will blog about that eventually, but right now, it’s just a bit too fresh. I will say, though, that I appreciate every act of kindness my family and I have received. Every card, tweet, post, card and visit have meant the world to us. In such a time of sadness, it is heartening to find out how blessed we really are.

Now, meet Marley, my new dog!

Marly, extreme makeover edition. I hope to settle her in between the before and after, but the groomer said that she needed a fresh start!

In the last week, Sister stayed over at Mom’s, and she had her dog, Cebu, with her. With just me and the cats – who I do dearly love – I realized how much I missed having a dog.  This morning, the City’s Animal Shelter posted a picture of Marley, and the rest is history.

She is four years old and came to the shelter when her family couldn’t afford to keep her. She appears to be a mix – I’m thinking maybe some sort of terrier, chow and maybe greyhound. (You know I’ll be getting one of those DNA kits soon!)

Cebu has given Marley a warm welcome, and Bagheera is having a ball with her! Marley seems to be quite amused with Baghi, and Baghi is having a ball breaking in the “new kid.”

Caring for Myself While Caring for Others

After suffering with Lewy body dementia for more than five years, my father is in the final days of his life.

While this time is about Dad, my mother and family, I’ve been working hard to maintain my healthy eating and exercise. There is lots of food at Mom and Dad’s house, and as the week goes on, I know there will be plenty more. I appreciate people bringing meals over, but I’ve also made sure that I have healthier options available. Fast food and take out are also popular options, but I’ve resisted the temptation. I’ve missed a workout or two, but I’m getting in my 30 minutes of cardio, even if it means a walk through the neighborhood.

Doing well during this emotional time is much more than a “yay me,” it’s about being at my best so I can best deal with this. It’s about feeling every emotion – the deep sadness of saying goodbye to the extreme gratitude for Hospice and supportive friends – instead of stuffing those emotions down with a Five Guys burger and Coke. It’s about perhaps reducing my risk for Lewy body dementia by eating better and exercising. It’s about taking care of myself so I can help take care of Dad, and to a larger extent, Mom.

A wonderful metaphor is to think about the oxygen masks that drop down in an airplane. The flight attendants guide you to put the mask on yourself before you help anyone else. Trying to maintain my healthy eating and exercise is  helping me breathe before I attempt to help others.

I’m not sure what the coming days will bring, but I know they won’t be easy. Please keep me and my family in your thoughts and prayers.

  25. Bought a hot petite small leopard print shirt today!
  26. Did I mention that I still have half of a bag of peppermint bark squares left over from December, 2010?
  27. I could’ve taken a size smaller in the new Supergirl t-shirt from the junior department
